English carries 35 marks in the preliminary paper — the same as Bangla — yet it is where candidates most often bleed marks. The reason is rarely a lack of English; it is that most people revise English the way they read a novel, without ever isolating the handful of rules that the paper keeps testing.

Split the paper before you study it

Treat the English paper as three separate subjects with three different study methods. Grammar rewards rules, vocabulary rewards daily exposure, literature rewards charts. Mixing the three into one undifferentiated "English study" is why progress feels slow.

The grammar areas that repeat

Across recent papers the same clusters return again and again. Master these before touching anything else, and the grammar half of the paper stops being a gamble.

• Subject–verb agreement, especially with "neither", "each", collective nouns and "of" phrases
• Right form of verbs and sequence of tenses
• Conditionals and the subjunctive "were"
• Voice and narration transformation
• Appropriate prepositions after verbs and adjectives
• Correlative pairs: "no sooner … than", "hardly … when", "not only … but also"
• Articles, including the sound rule for a/an
• Sentence correction and misplaced modifiers

Vocabulary that survives to exam day

Ten new words a day for six months is roughly eighteen hundred words — far more than you need. The problem is retention, not volume. Learn each word as a small family: the word, one synonym, one antonym and one sentence you wrote yourself. A word attached to four hooks is remembered; a word on a list is not.

1. Write the word and its meaning in English, not in translation.
2. Add one synonym and one antonym.
3. Write one sentence about your own life using the word.
4. Revisit the page after one day, one week and one month.

The minimum viable literature

You do not need to read the works. You need to know, for each period, who the major figures were, what they wrote, and one line each is remembered for. Build a single page per period and revise all of them in twenty minutes.

A weekly rhythm that works

• Monday to Friday: one grammar rule plus ten words each day.
• Saturday: 40 mixed MCQs under time, then review every wrong answer.
• Sunday: revise one literary period and the week’s word list.

Do this for three months and the English paper turns from the section you fear into the section that protects your total. The marks are not hard — they are simply specific, and specificity is exactly what a rule-first routine delivers.
